Vitamin D and Brain Health

Emerging research suggests that there is a strong correlation between vitamin D levels and long term brain health. Multiple studies have been conducted to test how vitamin D levels particularly affect the risk of dementia in older adults, and the findings suggest that it can possibly lower this risk. Understanding certain aspects of vitamin D shed light on its possible role in cognitive support.

  1. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Chronic inflammation, which can be caused by stress, sleep disorders, or cardiovascular issues, can lead to a host of health problems, including cognitive decline.

  2. Vitamin D reduces amyloid-beta plaque accumulation. Deposits of amyloid plaque in the brain happen naturally as we get older, but an excess of this plaque is directly linked to brain health issues such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

  3. Vitamin D boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor (good protein) in the brain, and supports nerve growth.

Unfortunately, most people have a vitamin D deficiency. Our greatest source of vitamin D is the sun, but the trade-off is too much sun exposure. In fact, the overall decline in vitamin D levels in the general population has been attributed in part to concerns about sun safety. Other factors that contribute to this deficiency include living in a colder climate, long hours of indoor work, and a busy home life. Here are some reminders about getting adequate vitamin D:

  1. The easiest way to ensure you are getting enough vitamin D is to take supplements. These are available over the counter.

  2. 10-30 minute walks in the sun several times a week are recommended for adequate vitamin D production.

  3. Incorporate vitamin D rich foods into your diet. Eat fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, dairy products such as yogurt and kefir, and drink beverages like orange juice and soy milk.
